When you are in a situation where your heart is broken and your significant other has left, you may find that you would like nothing more than to forget it ever happened.

The truth is, no matter what we wish that past relationship is something that will always be a part of us, and will we always remember the joy as well as the pain of a breakup.

If you are in a situation where you want to think about what you can do to make a breakup hurt less, take a look at a few tips below.

But first, I want you to understand and really, truly, honestly know deep in your heat that you don’t have to accept the break up.

Once you’ve done that, here are some tips to help you deal with a break up while you’re working on getting back together.

1. Don’t bash your ex

This might feel like second nature and the truth is that you might have some friends who will be all about helping you do this, but bashing your ex never helps anything.  All you will be doing is going over ground that you have already covered and you will find that this will give you an extremely bitter reputation among your friends.  Keep any nasty words to yourself and really think about what you can do in order to stay positive about things.

2. Get cleaned up

If you’ve already had the watch lots of movies and ignore the world phase, it’s time to get over that.  Everyone loves to wallow at least a little, but there will come a time where that is simply not appropriate.  When you are thinking about what you can do in order to make sure that you are on your way to getting over your breakup, stop and get cleaned up.  Start taking care of yourself and don’t let self-pity pull you down into a pit of despair.

3. Something new

After you have broken up with someone that you love very much, try doing something that can be just yours alone.  Take some time and really think about the things that you like to do, and think about how you can start doing something that is yours alone.  If old hobbies that involved your ex are just too painful now, take some time and really think about what hobbies that you can take up that will not recall painful memories.

4. Don’t rebound

Though it might seem very tempting to immediately get involved in a relationship with someone else, you will find that there are many different reasons why you simply should not!  You are not ready to date anyone else at the moment; you are going to be carrying a lot of your emotions and reactions over, and that is not fair to yourself or the new person that you are thinking about.  Take some time to really think about what you want.

5. Don’t get over it

If you keep thinking about your ex, there might be a reason why.  Sometimes, no matter how much you try to do it, a breakup is not the best thing for either of you.  If you need to get back into the relationship, think about ways that you can do that and think about what you can do to get started.  It is far from impossible, so put your efforts into getting back into your relationship, not getting over it!

Remember my advice from earlier. When it’s so easy to save a relationship and get your ex back, there’s no reason to settle for a break up and start feeling sorry for yourself. None!
